The idea is you come with the wildest idea you can think up, and when everyone goes WTF you "settle" for the idea that's still pretty far from the original policy aims. The left is good at this. "ALL TROOPS OUT OF EVERYWHERE NOW!!!!!" Actually I'd settle for a phased withdrawal over a couple of years, followed by a huge re-commitment of resources to health care and medical research. Without the harder position, though, that would sound too radical for most people.
The left can't get the echo machine in gear, though. The blogs and a few radio shows are there, but it lacks the top layer of 50 kW stations that can thunder with the seeming voice of God, and make newspapers think there's something to your rantings. See, it's all psywar. If that's how we're going to get our media, than we need to match the 20 years of careful work (with bottomless pockets) done by the other side.
Yes, there's that media thing again.

"This man suffers from a horrible case of political Tourette's [syndrome], and it's about time that we stand up and kick right back because I'm sick and tired of him kicking us in our shins," Massa said.
***
"It makes no difference what we do, this man suffers from political diarrhea of the mouth, and unless we stand up and call it as it is he's going to keep on getting away with it," Massa said.
***
In a direct challenge to Cheney, Massa added: "I want Dick Cheney to come debate me, anywhere, anytime, anyhow -- and let's see how he stands up to the truth."
The New York Democrat also lashed out at Sen. Jim DeMint as "personally responsible for placing you, the traveling American public at risk" by "placing a hold on the nominee of the director of the Transportation Security Agency."
"People like Jim DeMint and people like Dick Cheney need to go away so we can solve the problems they've created," Massa said.
